Science or No Science?

Just a quick note to point out yesterday's federal ruling against Intelligent Design in Dover, Pennsylvania, schools. U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III ruled in the only way he reasonably could, but these days that's no reason to expect that he'd actually make that ruling. Intelligent Design is not scientific, he declared, and thus it has no place in the science classroom. Sounds fair enough to me.

Will supporters of teaching Intelligent Design disappear? I doubt it--they may go underground for a little while, but they'll be back. I think they've learned enough from their recent efforts that they'll continue to hide their true identity of Creationists, so whatever they come up with next will continue to be camouflaged.

The breathtaking inanity of the Board’s decision is evident when considered against the factual backdrop which has now been fully revealed through this trial. The students, parents, and teachers of the Dover Area School District deserved better than to be dragged into this legal maelstrom, with its resulting utter waste of monetary and personal resources.

Previous post truncated for some reason ... here's the full text.

I actually think the Jones’ decision is a landmark ruling. I debated all day about its tone. The judge held nothing back. To quote: “The breathtaking inanity of the Board’s decision is evident when considered against the factual backdrop which has now been fully revealed through this trial. The students, parents, and teachers of the Dover Area School District deserved better than to be dragged into this legal maelstrom, with its resulting utter waste of monetary and personal resources.” I wondered if calling ID supporters stupid wouldn’t backfire. But as one of my debating partners said, this is how you have to treat bullies.

Jones, a Bush appointee, bitch slapped ID but good. He clearly identified it as religion and not science. If you recall, the Discovery Institute backed out of supporting the Dover school board. It’s clear now why. It’ll be hard for the Discovery Institute et. al. to climb out of the hole Dover dug.
