What's in Your Wallet?

If you're like most people, at some point or another, you've wondered how your salary stacks up against your favorite TV dad. Unfortunately, there's never been an authoritative source for those fictional salary estimates. Not until now, that is. In honor of last weekend's Father's Day, salary.com has come up with a list of 60 TV dads and their estimated salaries in today's dollars. Not surprisingly, Blake Carrington and "Jock" Ewing top the list, each bringing in almost a cool million in annual salary and bonuses. Presumably Bruce Wayne would've been higher than either of them, but he's just a guardian, not an actual dad. George Jefferson moves on up to #5, at more than $700,000, but Family Affair's Uncle Bill Davis, who lives in a similar deluxe apartment in the sky and has his very own gentleman's gentleman, is barely into six figures--I'd hate to see his credit card bills. Surprisingly, Homer Simpson doesn't do too badly, falling right in the middle of the list at #30 with $65,000. Underachieving are Mike Brady, who supports six kids and a live-in maid on $51,000 (maybe Carol's first husband left behind a tidy inheritance) and Father Knows Best's Jim Anderson, who doesn't even break $40,000 selling insurance. But Anderson still squeaks by Fred Flintstone (who lands at #55; for some reason, there is no #54 on the list), who's hauling in $37,000. Bringing up the rear at #60 is James Evans, Sr., of Good Times, who's unemployed. Too bad I didn't have this list three years ago . . .

I was thinking you could use this for tv's most wanted vol 2. I am inspired by Mike Brady--maybe I will be able to feed a mere 2 or 3 kids on an academic salary which will not be much bigger than his. What did Carol do all day?

She just hung and let Alice wait on her, as I recall. She was a pretty much a dilettante, dabbling in work outside of the house from time to time, but she never had any regular work.

But those TV dad's were never seen at work. Some of the dad's (Leave it to Beaver's Ward Cleaver for example) would leave to parts unknown and then come home after how knows what...what do you have to say to that? Maybe these guys should have gotten fired cause they were forever trying to remedy wacky mix-ups instead of working (but hey, that would be crummy tv)

It would be interesting to see how these mythical salaries could be adjusted to today's dollars...

Carol Brady a dilettante? Do you know how many hours a week she had to spend on her hair to get it to do that?

Ward's on the list, which has him identified as an accountant bringing in mid-40s (wasn't Fred Rutherford his boss?). But he wasn't around at home that much, mostly just evenings and weekends. As I remember, he didn't so much remedy the wacky mix-ups as explain the moral lesson behind them.

Since they're all mythical anyway, the salaries on this list are in today's dollars. If Ward Cleaver had been pulling down mid-40s in 1960, he would have been making eight times the national average. The Cleavers seemed comfortable, but not that comfortable.
