Best Magazines

Also in today's Chicago Tribune is their staff's picks of the fifty best magazines, along with commentary on each selection (but you'll probably have to register to see it). Their Top 10 is:

Blender
National Geographic Traveler
Vanity Fair
Wired
Cook's Illustrated
New York
People
Vogue
People en Espanol
Metropolis

There's nothing on the entire list that I read religiously, but I probably pick up six or seven of them on the newsstand to see what's in the new issue. Blender is not one of those, as it's just looked to me like another unexceptional indie-friendly music mag. Is it more than that? Does anybody here read it?

By the way, the Trib slots Mojo at #27, but they claim each issue comes with a CD. Mojo may have changed their policy, but it's always seemed to me that CDs are an occasional feature of the magazine. Are Trib staffers getting it mixed up with Uncut, which glues a CD onto the cover month in and month out?

WAIT A MINUTE.

The Tribune--allegedly one of the better papers in the country--runs a poll of their writers and comes up with a top ten including TWO EDITIONS of People magazine? Where the hell is the New Yorker? Or the Atlantic? Why didn't they just include GQ, The Star, and Maxim while they were at it?

And yes, they're wrong about Mojo, which usually gives away about 4-5 CDs a year. They ought to know better, but I'm not surprised.

Their enlightened comment on People, in at #7: "Admit it: You read it." Actually, I don't--sorry. The Atlantic is #17, and The New Yorker is #20 (Their comment: "Don't get us wrong, we're still devoted to The New Yorker.") GQ is at #24 with a bullet.

I don't read People either, except maybe once a year in the dentist's office. I want to see Maxim on that list too.
