Following Up

As promised, here's the link to the full New York Times Book Review piece I wrote about on Thursday, historian Alan Brinkley's write up of Kevin Phillips's new book, American Theocracy. It is not a little depressing to read a serious 480-page book on politics based largely on the theory that deep divisive conflicts between black and white, Catholic and Protestant, Jew and Irishman, East and South are immutable, that such differences cannot be harmonizes and that the politician should thus simply play upon them to his own advantage.

By the way, someone asked me when the new Phillips book would be out, and it's my understanding that it's due on Tuesday.
