What Do the Oscars Tell Us About Ourselves?

I was all ready to write something about the backlash we seem to be getting against the five nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars this year (which I'll admit, isn't the most stirring list I've ever seen), but I couldn't possibly top this smack-down from Kung Fu Monkey (via firedoglake.

Ever since I heard on Nightline how "Hollywood is snubbing mainstream America" because Harry Potter, Narnia, and Star Wars were all ignored at the oscars, I wanted to start my own blog on how ridiculous that notion is.

They didn't come right out and say it, but I liked Nightline's implication that snubbing The Dukes of Hazzard is somehow significant. The more I think about it, I don't know if that Nightline segment was serious, making fun of the controversy, or making fun of people who believe their favorites should get Oscars regardless of quality.
