Early Polling

The first polls regarding the federal relief effort are in, and talk about Teflon. The numbers are mixed, but based on what we've seen and what we know about the last few days, that's simply astonishing.

The survey also found that Americans were sharply divided over the performance of Bush and local, state and federal governments in the aftermath of Monday's storm. Slightly less than half--46 percent--approve of the way Bush has handled relief efforts while 47 percent disapprove, a result that might offer some cheer to beleaguered White House staffers who feared a stronger negative reaction.

The early response got equally mixed reviews, with 48 percent rating the federal effort as excellent or good and 51 percent saying it was not so good or poor--views deeply colored by party affiliation. According to the poll, 68 percent of Democrats rated the government's performance as "not so good" or "poor," while 66 percent of Republicans judged it to be "excellent" or "good."

Looks like you've been spammed Doug, in comments above. But as to the polls you referenced, you gotta love that while thousands starve and tens of thousands are homeless, it's white house staffers who are "beleaguered."

Yeah, I've been getting a little bit of spam. I responded to them in a previous comment, so I won't repeat myself. We'll see if it continues. I guess I'd probably address it up top, too.

As to the White House, although a lot of people suffered unbelievable hardship this week and the White House's problems don't even begin to compare--we certainly don't have to feel bad for them--but you've got to admit that they've had a pretty bad week.

So, 46 percent approve of the way Bush has handled relief efforts? Hard to believe, right? Well, if I recall, he had a 90 percent approval rating post 9/11, only to see that number slip to 40 percent or lower two weeks ago. That's s 50 percent drop. Now, let's do the math, 46 minus 50 equals ...?

You're right, Ron. As we get over the shock and start to see how the mismanagement affected things, let alone what I fear will be an unconscionable death toll, those numbers will have nowhere to go but down.

And the numbers shift as we speak. A Survey USA poll report in Salon shows Americans now disapproving of Bush's handling of Kartina 55 to 38 percent.
